Lynell Burmark, Ph.D., and author of Visual Literacy: See to Learn, Learn to See, uses the phrase, "What You Get Is What You See.—WYGIWYS™." She states, “You can’t understand or ‘get’ anything until you have a mental image to hook it on. For educators this has serious implications. If teachers want all their students on the same page, they really have to introduce their lessons—especially new concepts—with images before bombarding the students with words.” Visual content should be an integral part of the learning process. We have found that when teachers receive the proper training and use videos effectively in the classroom, their students are more attentive to the lesson, retain more of the information presented, and have improved test scores. This concept has led 100% Educational Videos, with the help of Lynell Burmark, Ph.D. and the University of San Diego’s Continuing Education program, to develop a new program entitled Effective Teaching with Classroom Videos. This program will provide the fundamentals of why visuals are so important for today’s learners, how to use these visual “best” in the classroom, and what you should look for when choosing the right visuals to support current content standards while bringing the lessons to life. A similar course is currently being offered by the University of San Diego for graduate level study, and counts towards one unit of graduate work. We have redesigned this course and now are offering a 30 minute video and written support materials to regional centers, districts, schools, teachers and librarians for free. It is imperative that we understand that when we educate our teachers on using visuals effectively in the classroom, they will use visuals more, they will see improved learning, and they will turn the lending library that supports them to provide them the best visual support available.
